This page describes available tools that can be used with data you retrieve from the GES DISC. NASA is not endorsing any of the commercial products, but providing this information strictly as a service to our users.

HDF, HDF-EOS

HDF-EOS
This is the home for all releases of HDF-EOS, plus tools like EOSView, HEG.. HDF-EOS User Manuals can be downloaded from that site. You can use the downloading instructions below* and then change ftp directory straight to what you need.

HDF4, HDF5
The home of the HDF group: provides access to API libraries and precompiled command-line utilities.

HDFView

HDFView is a visual tool for browsing and editing NCSA HDF4 and HDF5 files. Using HDFView, you can:

  • View a file hierarchy in a tree structure
  • Create new file, add or delete groups and datasets
  • View and modify the content of a dataset
  • Add, delete and modify attributes
  • Replace I/O and GUI components such as table view, image view and metadata view

Aura and TOMS Read Software

The GES DISC provides read software for accessing Aura and TOMS  data files stored in the EOS Hierarchical Data Format (HDF-EOS5).

  • The software 'read_h5' is written in the C language. You will need the HDF5 libraries when you compile the source code. The program allows users to select a parameter, latitude range, and dump the data to screen, ASCII file.
  • The software 'atmos_h5' is an IDL based code. This program not only creates the parameter subsets (with option of converting data to geophysical parameters) and writes in ASCII or binary format, it also displays quicklook image on the screen and creates jpeg files.
  • The read software for accessing TOMS level 3 daily gridded products (ASCII Format) are also available from DAAC. Please see this table for additional software which can be used to read Aura and TOMS data.

 

TRMM Read Software

Software for reading TRMM and TRMM version 2 data files

 PPS/TSDIS Software

The Precipitation Processing System/TRMM Science Data and Information System provides the PPS/TSDIS Science Algorithm Toolkit, the Orbit Viewer THOR, and the VIRS L1B Radiance Converter. 

 

UARS Read Software

This UARS read software programs read and dump the contents of all UARS level 3A data files (3AL, 3AT, 3LP, 3TP, 3AS/3BS, and UARS Correlative). The input file may be either the actual data file (PROD extension) or the metadata file (META extension). Output can be redirected to an ASCII file. Subsetting by latitude and vertical height can also be done.  These  software programs are no longer extensively maintained.

h5dump

h5dump enables the user to examine the contents of an HDF5 file and dump those contents, in human readable form, to an ASCII file.

hdp

hdp is a command line utility designed for quick display of contents and data of HDF objects. It can list the contents of hdf files at various levels with different details. It can also dump the data of one or more specific objects in the file.

AIRS Software Tools

The listed tools are available to help handle and manipulate AIRS data files. The AIRS Data Support Team at GES DAAC is researching, testing and enhancing various software packages to designed to handle the HDF-EOS data format (the AIRS standard format). Inclusion of an externally developed software tool in the list below does not represent an endorsement of that tool by the Goddard Earth Sciences DISC.
