JAVA MAP APPLET

The Java map applet, used by our data search and order tool as well as by Giovanni, allows users a graphical way to select a spatial area on a map of the Earth. Most users find this tool more useful than the alternative, which is to enter the latitudes and longitudes of a box directly.

The Java map applet requires that Java be enabled in the browser. For users who choose not to use the Java map applet or those who cannot (see Browser and Platform Compatibility below), we offer a non Java spatial area selection tool.

How To Use The Applet

There are several functions available with the Java map applet:

• To view the coordinates of a point on the map, click anywhere on the map and the longitude and latitude values will automatically be entered in the boxes to the right.
• To use the selection tool, use your mouse and draw a rectangular box over the region you want to select. The latitude and longitude coordinates will be automatically entered into the text boxes to the right of the map.
• You can zoom in closer to a region you have selected if you want to view a continental boundary. Make your selection first, and then click on the "Zoom In" button available to the right.
• Selections can be made across the international dateline. To shift the map, create your selection box with your mouse and then place your mouse over the center of the box. Hold down the right button on your mouse and slide the selection box to the right or left of the map. The map should move accordingly.
• If you want to enter the latitude and longitude coordinates manually you can do so by typing the coordinate in the text box to the right. The values of "N", "S", "E", and "W" will automatically be entered into the text box. Once you make the text change you can either hit enter or use the tab key to jump to the next coordinate box to see the new selection box change according to your input values.

Browser and Platform Compatibility

Not all Web browser/platform combinations work well with the Java map applet. In addition, some users choose to disable Java in their browsers for security reasons. Even though we strive to support all users, we recognize some users may have problems. The table below represents, to the best of our ability, the compatibility of the Java map applet with various browser and platform combinations.
