Jaeger Monthly Mean Global Precipitation Data Set

Summary:

The Jaeger Monthly Mean Global Precipitation data set consists of gridded mean monthly global precipitation values for 1931 to 1960 over the continents and 1955 to 1965 over the oceans. The extent of the data ranges from latitudes of 90 degrees South to 90 degrees North and longitudes of 180 degrees East to 180 degrees West.

Jaeger Monthly Mean Global Precipitation

Data Set Introduction:

The Jaeger surface rain gauge observations dataset consists of gridded mean monthly global precipitation values for 1931 to 1960 over the continents and 1955 to 1965 over the oceans.

The precipitation data over the continental grids are based on the eye estimates from isopleth maps prepared from up-to-date climatic atlases conataining annual and monthly rainfall values, supplemeted by other datasets. For estimates rainfall over ocean grids, Moller's method was adopted. Monthly percentage frequencies were extracted from the mapped isolines of the US Marine Climatic Atlas (US Naval Weather Service 1955-1965) and interpolated to grid points, After re-expressing the monthly frequencies as annual percentages, the values were scaled to rainfall depth units using Geiger's(1965) precipitation map to yield monthly precipitation means.

Objective/Purpose:

This data set is extensively used for producing global analyses of large-scale monthly rainfall climatology data using satellite and conventional data.

Spatial Coverage:

The data set contains monthly globally merged rainfall grid estimates extending from latitudes of 90 degrees North to 90 degrees South and longitudes of 180 degrees West to 180 degrees East. The data progresses in order from North to South, and West to East.The first grid element correspond to values centered at 89.375 degrees North, 178.75 degrees West.

Spatial Resolution:

The spatial resolution of the data is 2.5 degree latitude by 5.0 degree longitude grids.

Grid Description:

The Jaeger Monthly Mean Global Precipitation Data are mapped to a 2.5 degree latitude by 5 degree longitude equal area grid over the region from 90 degrees South to 90 degrees North and 180 degrees East to 180 degrees West.

12. Application of the Data Set:
Applications of this data set include the exploration of the rainfall variations on the global scale over a long time period (1931 to 1960), the relationship between the rainfall variations and the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions that occur in the Pacific during that time period, and as supplemental information to conventional rainfall data which are often scarce in the tropics.
