The new files have a date stamp of 3/12/2012 We apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused and appreciate your patience and understanding.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE Mar 12, 2012 03/12/2012 - Status Update of TRMM 3B42, 3B43
From George Huffman and David Bolvin: Due to the ongoing SSMIS calibrations, we're still looking for being done reprocessing late in March.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE Jan 19, 2012 01/19/2012 - Status Update of TRMM 3B42, 3B43
The TMPA (3B42, 3B43) Version 7 algorithms have been delivered to TSDIS/PPS and will start the computation on March 1, 2012 or earlier, according to the algorithm developer. One remaining issue is that SSMIS is still not settled down, so it's not clear how much SSMIS data will be included in the record.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE Oct 12, 2011 Important: TRMM 2A12 Data Production has Resumed
Important: TRMM 2A12 Data Production has Resumed From TSDIS/PPS: TRMM 2A12 products have been verified by the science team and production has resumed. The backlog of 2A12 products since the production hold is now up to date. The version 7 2A12 products produced after the data hold (October 05,2011)now use the AVHRR only SST as an ancillary data source to process 2A12v7 and 2A12RTv7. The AMSR-E data is no longer used as an additional input source in this product. The AMSR-E antenna stopped spinning at 0726GMT Oct 4, most likely due to aging lubricant in the mechanism. AMSR-E is currently not producing any data. The Aqua spacecraft accommodated the spin-down, which occurred over a period of about 25 minutes, and continues to operate normally, with all other instruments functioning in science mode. NASA will work with JAXA to understand the condition of the AMSR-E instrument and possible future steps.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE Sep 07, 2011 Status of TRMM 3B42, 3B43
From PPS Helpdesk: There will be a delay in the production of all 3B4X products after the conclusion of the previous TRMM product version 6 which ended in June 2011. The responsible algorithm scientists are working on new versions for the other inputs (SSMI, etc.) that make up these level 3 products, as well as integrating improved rain gauge input; therefore these products may not be available for quite some time (months after the V7 start). Once the 3B4X products are produced again, I was informed that these will now be available late the next month instead of the usual 2 or more weeks that is customary due to the collection of more input sources that will serve to increase the accuracy of the 3B4X products. For further questions please contact the GES DISC Help Desk.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE Aug 25, 2011 TRMM V7 Data Availibility
TRMM V7 data is in the process of being archived and made available through the various services at the GES DISC. During this time you may see sporadic periods of data availability for the version 7 data. We will continue to offer version 6 data for those that want to download a continuous data set. Once all the data for version 7 is available we will remove the version 6 data from the archive and available services. We expect to have a completed version 7 by September 15 and then start the deletion of version 6 however this timeframe may change. For further questions please contact the GES DISC Help Desk.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE Aug 16, 2011 TRMM Version 7 Data Status Update
IMPORTANT MESSAGE Jul 05, 2011 IMPORTANT: PPS TRMM V7 Data Processing Start -Product Distribution Delay and Important Information
PPS will transition to Version 7 TRMM production starting with July 01, 2011 (DOY 182) TRMM data. PPS Version 6 data production will end on Saturday July 02, 2011 with the completion of Level 3 TRMM data processing for June 2011 (except for the 3B4X products which will be available later in July after all inputs are received and verified). After July 02, 2011 no new TRMM data will be available for public distribution until the science team verifies the new V7 products for release. This effort is expected to last for up to 14 days. TRMM Realtime users will not be affected. PPS will continue to produce Version 6 data until Version 7 data is verified and implemented. Users with Standing Orders will receive all expected TRMM V6 data through June 2011 including 3B42 and 3B43 products when complete. All IP data products beginning with July 01, 2011 data will be Version 7. Version 6 data products will continue to be accessible until they are reprocessed for Version 7. Science Users can use our new PPS Toolkit for reading the TRMM Version 7 products. The V7 Toolkit (TKIO 1.6.1) can be found at ftp://pps.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/PPStoolkit/CURRENT_RELEASE/ TRMM Version 7 filespecs can be found at: http://pps.gsfc.nasa.gov/tsdis_redesign/SelectedDocs.html We appreciate your understanding and kind patience during this important transition period. We will issue any update notifications as needed. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE May 25, 2011 TRMM PR instrument anomaly
From TSDIS/PPS Help Desk: As most of you are probably aware, TRMM experienced a PR instrument anomaly on May 29, 2009 which affected all TRMM PR data resulting in missing data since orbit# 65716. If you have obtained any of the following TRMM PR products and associated products (browse, CSI, etc) since that time, either through your Standing Orders, Special Requests or through other means, please delete the following products if you have not already. 1A21 1B21 1C21 2A21 2A23 2A25 2B31 3B31 3A25 3A26 We anticipate that due to various outside factors (vacations, other obligations, etc.) that some of our science users may not have had the opportunity to look at this PR data obtained through Standing Orders, etc. NASA and JAXA are currently working on a plan to switch to backup systems on the spacecraft that will address the failure of a frequency converter, system control and data processing unit associated with the PR problem. We will update you on this situation as new information becomes available and sincerely appreciate your continued patience during this period.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE May 24, 2011 TRMM Replacement Level 3 products for April 2011
Due to missing data discovered in TRMM 3A25 Products for April 2011 which was traced to a PPS hardware issue; PPS has rolled back and reprocessed the following TRMM data: 3A11 3A12 3A25 3A26 3B31 Please note that TRMM 3B42 and 3B43 products were previously verified and are correct. It is important that users are aware that this is not a TRMM data or algorithm problem, but is attributable to changes made during an early April PPS maintenance period. As of May 24, 2011, all the above products in Mirador and TOVAS have been replaced with the latest replacement products from PPS. If you have obtained any of the above data products earlier through Mirador or TOVAS, please discard these products and use the replacement products bearing a timestamp of May 18, 2011. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused and appreciate your patience and understanding.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE Mar 10, 2011 TRMM 3B42 and 3B43 Products for January 2011 Now Available After Production Delay
TRMM 3B42 and 3B43 products are now available from PPS after the previously announced production delay. Changes and updates to these products starting with the January 2011 data are detailed by David Bolvin in the following section (below): "We determined the noise on the NOAA-16 AMSU-B precipitation estimates was becoming too large, so we eliminated NOAA-16 from the stream and took the opportunity to introduce the NOAA-18 MHS and MetOp-A MHS precipitation estimate streams into the 3B42 product. The AMSU-B and MHS instruments are very similar, and nominally produce the same quality precipitation estimates. In V7, we will assess when the NOAA-16 AMSU-B precipitation estimates start to degrade in quality (well before January 2011), and eliminate them from the 3B42 product as appropriate." We appreciate your continued patience and understanding during this period.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE Mar 02, 2010 TRMM PR Anomaly - Availability of PR Data
From TSDIS/PPS Help Desk: Dear Science User, PPS is now producing operational PR data from June 19, 2009 through present using new calibration coefficients from JAXA. The new calibration is valid for times after the switch to PR-B operation to recover from the PR anomaly in May, 2009. The post-anomaly data will be showing up on the PPS Public FTP area and on STORM for normal orders very soon. We anticipate availability on Monday December 21, 2009 or shortly thereafter. Some PR data was lost and empty granules have been generated for these times. The empty PR products exist from May, 29, 2009 (orbit 65716) through June, 18, 2009 (orbit 66038). The first orbit with data after the PR anomaly is June 19, 2009 (orbit 66039). PPS will continue to trend the PR data throughout this post anomaly period. In addition, JAXA will provide details of the calibration and an assessment of any impacts to data fields in the near future. Please also be aware of the following issue for TRMM PR Level 3 products after TRMM PR switched to the B side: The PR anomaly has caused the loss of PR data from 29 May 2009 to 19 June 2009. As a result, the June 2009 Level 3 PR products contain only 12 days of data. This makes the June 2009 products less reliable due to the lack of sufficient data upon which to base the statistics. Please take care when using the June 2009 product for quantitative analysis. Thank you for your patience during this period. Have a great Holiday Season, PPS Help Desk
IMPORTANT MESSAGE Dec 18, 2009 TRMM PR Instrument Anomaly Update
From TSDIS/PPS Help Desk After an instrument anomaly on May 29, 2009 the TRMM PR resumed observations on June 17th, 2009. All TRMM PR production data is currently being held until a calibration effort is completed by JAXA. Our intention was to be able to release the calibrated, post-anomaly PR data by the end of Sept. 2009 but that has not been possible. The recalibration effort by JAXA has required internal and external calibrations utilizing the ground-based Active Radar Calibrator. The impact of the new calibration curve on the rain retrievals is being examined by JAXA and the PR Team. Particular attention is being given to any biases introduced and changes in noise levels that impact sensitivity to ensure that continuity of the retrievals can be preserved on either side of the anomaly date. The TRMM PR is still recording observations which the ground system is receiving, all PR housekeeping indicate the radar is operating normally and the instrument is in good condition. Users can expect the only permanent gap in TRMM PR data due to this anomaly to start on May 29, 2009 and last through June 17-19, 2009. The exact dates and orbit numbers will be designated by JAXA. TRMM PR real-time data is continuing to be produced and made available to real-time users with the qualification that the retrievals are suspect.Real-time users should contact PPS for concerns regarding data quality. Be assured that JAXA, the PR Team and NASA are working to get high quality rain retrievals out to all users as soon as possible. We will inform all our users once we receive any new information.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE Mar 25, 2009 Version of 3B42 and 3B43 updated
TRMM Data Users - Due to changes in the AMSU calibration, all 3B42 and 3B43 granules starting in May 2007 and continuing for the remainder of the version 6 processing cycle will now have the designation 6A to indicate this change. One of the inputs to 3B42 and 3B43 is AMSU-B data processed by NOAA. NOAA began processing with a new version of their algorithm May 31, 2007 around 1800 UTC. 3B42 and 3B43 had to change to use the new AMSU-B. Since both 3B42 and 3B43 use data from the entire month, all 3B42 and 3B43 for May 2007 forward have the filename version 6A and the algorithm version 6.43.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE Mar 09, 2009 The latent heating products of 2A12 and 3A12 over oceans are experimental
The latent heating products of 2A12 and 3A12 over ocean surfaces should be regarded as experimental- please confer first with the algorithm developers (by the contacting DAAC at email address below) when using the latent heating product over ocean. Over-land latent heating estimates from TRMM products 2A12 and 3A12 should not be used, as they have not been evaluated quantitatively or qualitatively.
