Mayotte Island

51F-45-066
Flight 51F; 14S, 45E, 3 Aug 1985

Mayotte Island is part of the Comoro Islands, northwest of Madagascar at the north end of the Mozambique Channel. It is not a true oceanic island, as it lies atop the minicontinent that includes Madagascar and the Seychelles. It is located in a latitude that supports coral reefs, however, and the main island group lies within an incomplete barrier reef. The island-reef complex is geologically old, and subsidence of the platform has been too rapid to permit the entire barrier reef to maintain its growth.
