Flight 41G; 24N, 58E, 6 April 1984
Observations of spiral eddies in other parts of the oceans show that they are seen
best where surfactants are spread across the sea's surface. Petroleum surface slicks
also provide a fairly good background in the sun's reflection, but the oil is not as evenly
spread as the natural surfactants. The result is less detail.
A good example of an "oily surface view" was seen by
the crew of the Challenger as the shuttle orbited over the southern Gulf of Oman in
April 1984. The extent of the pollution coming through the Strait of Hormuz was
apparent in this scene.
