Eighteen months after the observations during Flight STS-6, large patches of
oil were widespread throughout the Persian Gulf, their iridescent colors glowing
as the crew of the Challenger looked down from the flight deck. As the spacecraft
crossed the coasts of Iran during a descending orbit, the extent of the pollution was
evident near the island of Sir Abu Nu'ayr. Ships crossing the scene contributed to
the pollution, but to a degree far less than the drifting oil masses from Kharg Island.
