Stan was only the second “s” storm to develop in history, the other being Sebastien during the 1995 Hurricane Season.  Stan was a weak hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, but nonetheless caused catastrophic damage and many deaths throughout Central America.

Officially, Stan is responsible for 80 deaths in the Mexican states of Oaxaca, Veracruz, and Chiapas, however, Stan was embedded in a larger-scale surface circulation which dumped huge amounts of rainfall on portions of Central America.  This caused massive flooding and catastrophic landslides that likely killed as many as 2000 individuals2

 Storm History

Stan developed during the morning of 1 October into a Tropical Depression about 110 miles southeast of Cozumel, Mexico.  From there, he continued on a slow northwestward track towards the Yucatan Peninsula and became the eighteenth named Storm of the 2005 Atlantic Hurricane Season early on 2 October, just prior to making landfall south of Cozumel.

Stan briefly lost Tropical Storm status just before entering into the Gulf of Mexico after interacting with land for 24 hours.  He did, however, regain Tropical Storm strength once back over open waters in the Bay of Campeche.  Stan quickly began to change direction, heading southwest towards southeastern Mexico and the Veracruz area.  At 4 AM EDT on 4 October, Stan became a minimal Category 1 Hurricane with 75 mph maximum sustained surface winds, and made landfall shortly thereafter as a minimal hurricane. Stan quickly dissipated into a Tropical Storm over the very mountainous terrain of southeastern Mexico, and by 4 AM CDT on 5 October, had become a weak low-level swirl over the mountains3.
