GIOVANNI 3.0.4 RELEASE NOTES

General Changes

  1. New instances: OMI, TOMS
  2. Lat-Lon Map, Time-averaged - Enhanced Color Bar preferences by adding a "Pre-defined" option.
  3. Latitude-Time and Longitude-Time Hovmoller Diagrams - Removed the Map Projection option from showing up since they are not applicable for these plots.
  4. Correlation Map - Improved the performance dramatically and enhanced the image by customizing the Color Bar, labels, and preferences.
  5. Scatter Plots - Bug fixes.
  6. Time Series, Area Statistics - Added a new service that computes area statistics (mean, minimum, maximum, and standard deviation) and generates a time series area statistics plots.
  7. Vertifical Profiles - Added a new service that processes vertical data and generates vertical profile plots with error bars.
  8. Overlay of Lat-Lon Maps - Added a new service that creates an overlay plot of two data parameters. The values of the first data parameter are displayed via a colorscale and those of the second are displayed via a contour line plot labeled with values of that parameter.
  9. Subsetted Parameters Along Orbit Track, Vertical Height to Pressure Levels - Added capability for line plot overlays on curtain plots, bit mask filtering, and generation of output in KMZ format to support Google Earth users.
  10. Data Lineage - Debuted an improved data lineage capability. Data lineage is a detailed description of the services used in generating the image or data. These service descriptions are registered in the Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) viaServices Entry Resource Format (SERF) documents.

Instance Specific Changes


AIRS Daily

  • Caveats
    • The with-HSB data is only available between August 30, 2002 and February 5, 2003. The HSB instrument failed after that.
    • AIRS OLR (not clear-sky OLR) has been excluded from the parameter list. Due to software glitches, this product is deemed as unfit for science use. It will become available again in the next data release (V5).

A-Train

  • Changes
    • Now has eight curtain profile parameters and 10 strip swath parameters for a total of 18 parameters. We now have data collocation capability for the following five A-Train instruments: CloudSat, Calipso, Aqua MODIS, Aqua AIRS, and Aura OMI.
    • New science parameters added from various A-Train instruments:
      • New version of CloudSat Radar Reflectivity Data, Release 4 (Version 008)
      • Cloud Pressures from Aura OMI Cloud Products, using Raman Rotational Scattering and O2-O2 absorption.
      • Aqua MODIS Total Aerosol Optical Depth at 550 nm and the Fine Mode Fraction data (10-km resolution)
      • Aqua MODIS Cloud Optical Depth (1-km resolution parameter). This required some non-trivial modifications of the infrastructure swath services.
    • New functionalities and capabilities:
      • Aqua AIRS data can be visualized independently of CloudSat data (i.e. without selecting CloudSat data).
      • Aqua AIRS is now collocated with CloudSat (and thus, CALIPSO) on-the-fly using CloudSat orbital two-line elements.
      • Cloud Pressures from the Aqua AIRS, Aqua MODIS, and Aura OMI can now be visualized as "line plots" on the various profile curtain plots. They are available on the results page as selectable refinements. The Altitude to Pressure conversion will need to be set to "yes" in order for the line plots to show up on the curtain plots.



MODIS Daily

  • Changes
    • Now provides access to Collection 005 Aqua and Terra MODIS daily data only (only Collection 005, and not 004, is recommended by the MODIS Science Team for scientific investigations).
    • Addded a new Time-Series of Statistics service that provides time series of means, pixel counts, and minimums and maximums over a selected area.
    • Added four new inter-comparison services:
      • Lat-Lon Map of correlation over time
      • Lat-Lon Map of time-averaged differences
      • Overlay of Lat-Lon Maps
      • Time Series of area-averaged differences
    • Added parameter weighted averaging of aerosol small mode fraction.
    • The Aerosol Small Mode Fractionis now available via all visualization services (except the two new difference services).
    • The Color Bar now has three modes: Pre-defined, Dynamic, and Custom (user-specified).
  • Caveats
    • The aerosol small mode fraction is not available for either Lat-Lon Map of time-averaged differences, or Time Series of area-averaged differences, at present. This will be added in a future release.
    • The Correlation Map and Time Series of area-averaged differences services will fail if less than two time steps are selected.
    • The Lat-Lon Map of time-averaged differences and Overlay of Lat-Lon Maps services will fail if two parameters are not selected.
    • Land-Sea masking is currently unavailable. We are working on it and it will be available soon.
    • Data Lineage is not currently available, but will be soon in a future release.


MODIS Monthly

  • Changes
    • Now provides access to Collection 005 Aqua and Terra MODIS daily data only (only Collection 005, and not 004, is recommended by the MODIS Science Team for scientific investigations).
    • Added additional parameters not included in the Giovanni 2 MOVAS Daily including Angstrom Exponents over Land and Ocean, Mass Concentrations over Land and Ocean, Scattering Angle, and Water Vapor above Cloud.
    • Now incorporates the full array of services available in the MODIS Daily instance, including:
      • Time Series of Statistics
      • Lat-Lon Map of correlation over time
      • Lat-Lon Map of time-averaged differences
      • Overlay of Lat-Lon Maps
      • Time Series of area-averaged differences
    • Aerosol Fine Mode Fraction was renamed to Aerosol Small Mode Fraction.
    • Added parameter weighted averaging of aerosol small mode fraction.
    • The Aerosol Small Mode Fraction is now available via all visualization services (except the two new difference services).

    • Relocated parameter "GPCP precipitation" from group Land Surface to Atmosphere.
    • Renamed the following atmospheric parameters:

      Aerosol Optical Thickness Aerosol Optical Depth at 0.55 microns
      Mean Atmospheric Water Vapor Atmospheric Water Vapor (QA-weighted)

OMI

  • Changes
    • This is the initial release of the OMI instance in Giovanni 3.
    • Parameters include total ozone, effective reflectivity and UV aerosol index from the daily gridded 0.25° x 0.25° high-resolution (OMTO3E), and the 1.0° x 1.25° TOMS-like (OMTO3D) data products.
    • Available visualizations include: Lat-Lon Maps, time series with statistics, Latitude vs. Time Hovmoller, Longitude vs. Time Hovmoller, and Animated Lat-Lon Maps.
    • Data download available for generated image in PNG format, or data in HDF4 or in ASCII formats. Original input files are also available for download in HDF-EOS5 format.
    • Data lineage describing the steps used is available.
  • Caveats
    • Cannot compare data from different grid resolutions using scatter plot at this time.
    • Cannot adjust the X and Y axes for scatter plot at this time.
    • Animation will only work for a single parameter.
    • Detailed description and documentation of the various features of this instance (service descriptions etc.) are being worked on and should be available shortly.

TOMS

  • Changes
    • This is the initial release of the TOMS Giovanni instance.
    • Parameters include total ozone, effective reflectivity, UV aerosol index, and erythemal UV irradiance from the TOMS Earth Probe (EP) and Nimbus-7 instruments. Total ozone and effective reflectivity data also available from the TOMS Meteor-3 instrument. All data are daily and gridded at 1.0° x 1.25° resolution.
    • Available visualizations include: Lat-Lon Maps, Time Series with statistics, Latitude vs. Time Hovmoller, Longitude vs Time Hovmoller, and animated Lat-Lon Maps.
    • Data download available for generated image in PNG format, or data in HDF4 or in ASCII formats. Original input files are also available for download in HDF format.
    • Data lineage describing the steps used is available.
  • Caveats
    • Users should NOT use TOMS EP data after 2001 for trend analysis. Please see TOMS notes for more information.
    • Cannot compare data from different grid resolutions using scatter plot at this time.
    • Cannot adjust the X and Y axes for scatter plot at this time.
    • Animation will only work for a single parameter.
