Giovanni-3 Operation Technical Summary: Data Scaling

Data Scaling

This operation applies a scaling filter to a given parameter in an HDF file.

Input parameters: Any data parameters in an HDF file.

Output Description: Scaled data parameter values

Output Parameters: Geophysical data values.

File Type:
Input: HDF4 Output: HDF4

Example: Remotely-sensed chlorophyll data (ocean color) traditionally used 8-bit data values, i.e., 0-256. The logarithmic scaling factor for this 8-bit data allowed calculation of the concentration rangefrom 0.08 to 66 mg m-3. The Data Scaling operation will perform a similar calculation for any applicable data parameter.

Other information:
Many HDF files contain values that require the application of a scaling factor (or factors) to be converted to geophysical data values. The HDF Scaling Operation performs this calculation.

This Technical Summary page is under development -- for information on this operation while
the document is being prepared, please send a message to GES DISC Help.
