Giovanni publications update, January-June 2015

   Research publications which cite the use of the NASA Geospatial Innovative Online Visualization ANd aNalysis Infrastructure (Giovanni) have been published at a very consistent pace during the first six months of 2015. Since January, 92 papers, a rate of just more than 15 per month, have appeared in peer-reviewed scientific journals, including Tellus A, the International Journal of Remote Sensing, Geophysical Research Letters, Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, the Journal of Marine Systems, and the Arabian Journal of Geosciences.

   Giovanni was also used for the analysis and visualization of Earth science data described in several chapters appearing in books published in the past six months. Two of these books are Toward an Interdisciplinary Approach in Earth System Science, published by Springer International, and The Red Sea, published by Springer Earth System Sciences. In addition, Giovanni was used to create images appearing reported in Chapter 16, “Phytoplankton Primary Production,” authored by M. Kyewalyanga, in the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) Regional State of the Coast Report for the Western Indian Ocean.

   Below are short summaries of six papers from the most recent update, followed by the list of the 92 new publications, with links to the abstracts of each paper. The actual availability of the papers depends on institutional subscriptions to the journals. Libraries, particularly in academia and government, are likely to have subscriptions to many of these journals, allowing readers to download the full version of the publications. In some cases, only a PDF version of a preprint, a pre-publication draft, or an “in press” version of an accepted paper is available at this time. Longer summaries of these six papers will appear in the July 2015 issue of The Giovanni News.  [Papers noted as "in press" below may be in print at this time; the "in press" designation was found when the paper(s) first appeared online.]


•         In Computers and Geosciences, V.M. Mantas, Zhong Liu (NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center), and A.J.S.C. Pereira described a Web service and Android application that can provide rainfall data and other types of Earth science data. (Mantas, V.M., Liu, Z., and Pereira, A.J.S.C. •       P.M. Barrett and co-authors researched the distribution of aluminum and iron concentrations in the North Atlantic Ocean and examined how these concentrations might indicate changing patterns of dust deposition. •         Frequent Giovanni user Mark Jury went to the beach for his most recent publication on research that used Giovanni, examining climate and sand in Mozambique, in the journal Scientific Research and Essays. •          A team led by T.M. •         In the Turkish Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Mustafa Kocak described an investigation of the solubility of different marine nutrients supplied from the Eastern Mediterranean atmosphere in both fresh and salt water and how this may affect ocean productivity. •         In Landslides, Simon Allen and his four co-authors reported on an examination of the factors contributing to the tragic disaster which inundated the Indian village of Kedarnath in water and mud in June 2013.
