NASA's Giovanni system generating 10 publications a month in 2011

The diverse topics listed above provide a cross-section of research publications that have appeared in recent months, all of which have utilized the NASA Goddard Earth Science Data and Information Service Center (GES DISC) Giovanni system to analyze and visualize satellite remote-sensing data from NASA missions and related data sets. At the end of April 2011, an update to the Giovanni publications list for 2011 discovered 35 new journal papers, bringing the current total for 2011 to 42 – a rate of over 10 research publications a month!
The rate at which publications are appearing in 2011 attests to the usefulness of Giovanni in many diverse areas of earth science research. It also attests to the simplicity of using Giovanni, as researchers who are generally unfamiliar with NASA remote-sensing data can rapidly and easily find data related to their particular investigative quests.
As we contemplate the recent catastrophic events in 2011, including the terrible toll of the tsunami in Japan and the devastation wrought by the massive tornado outbreak in the U.S. Southeast, we both hope and know that Giovanni might be used to investigate many different aspects of these geophysical phenomena, likely in ways that we cannot predict. Such scientific application can contribute to both the advancement of science and to the improved welfare of mankind.
