At the end of 2015, when all the journal publications on research that had used the Geospatial Interactive Online Visualization ANd aNalysis Infrastructure (Giovanni) had been counted, the total of 231 was higher than that of any previous year. This indicator of increasing usage of the system by the scientific community is a credit to the efforts of the Giovanni development team and scientific staff at the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC).

Articles on research using Giovanni appeared in many different scientific journals, including Environmental Science and Pollution Research; Izvestiya, Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics; Climate Dynamics; Molecular Ecology; PLoS ONE; Polar Record; and the Ethiopian Journal of Environmental Studies and Management. Giovanni was also referenced in the book, Icebergs: Their Science and Links to Global Change, by Dr. Grant Bigg of the University of Sheffield, published by Cambridge University Press. 

Below are short summaries of five papers from the most recent update, followed by the list of the new publications, with links to the abstracts of each paper. The actual availability of the papers depends on institutional subscriptions to the journals. Libraries, particularly in academia and government, are likely to have subscriptions to many of these journals, allowing readers to download the full version of the publications. In some cases, only a PDF version of a preprint, a pre-publication draft, or an “in press” version of an accepted paper is available at this time. [Some papers noted as "in press" below may be in print at this time; the "in press" designation was found when the paper(s) first appeared online.]


►          Landslides are an ever-present danger in mountainous regions. In fact, one of the images in the 2nd Class of the Giovanni Image Hall of Fame is from a paper about the Kedarnath landslide disaster in the Himalyan foothills of India. Writing in the journal, Landslides, Ari Posner and Konstantine Georgakakos described a system using soil moisture data and near-real-time precipitation data to predict landslides in El Salvador. ►        Another global concern is the proper utilization of fisheries resources. Lumban-Gaol et al., in the European Journal of Remote Sensing, described how sea surface height was related to the bigeye tuna fishery in the eastern Indian Ocean. ►          In PLoS One, Radina Soebiyanto and her co-authors described research appropriate for winter, evaluating the connection between weather and influenza in several European cities. ►          In the journal Atmosphere, Uwe Feister, Nathalie Cabrol, and Donat Häder examined how light scattering by cloud particles affects solar ultraviolet (UV) irradiance intensity. While cloud modification factors (CMFs) can influence solar energy generation, they can also increase the damage to organisms from UV radiation. This research was performed for areas of the high Andes Mountains. (Feister, U., Cabrol, N., and Häder, D. ►           The image accompanying this article shows part of a massive dust storm that spread from Saudi Arabia to neighboring countries of the Middle East in late March 2012. This dust storm was the subject of the paper by Basha et al. in Remote Sensing of Environment,Investigation of aerosol optical, physical, and radiative characteristics of a severe dust storm observed over UAE.”  A NASA Earth Observatory article about this dust storm, Dust over Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf, has a larger version of this image.
