At the end of the year 2012, the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) updated the count of peer-reviewed science journal publications in which the Giovanni data visualization and analysis tool had been utilized.   This compilation of scientific progress has been performed every year since 2004, and, with only one exception, the publication count in each succeeding year has increased.
The pace at which papers involving Giovanni appeared had been so high in 2011 (an average of just under 14 publications a month) that it was uncertain whether this pace would be maintained in 2012.   At the end of the year, the final count of 182 publications indicated that the pace of Giovanni usage had indeed increased, by approximately a paper a month.
In performing the count, any papers that were available to the public in 2012 are included. Many scientific journals now publish online electronic versions of papers in advance of their print publication.   Thus, some papers available in 2012 will officially have a publication year of 2013. However, in this age of electronic communication and online information, it seems somewhat slow to wait for the traditional publication date.  The count had been conducted the same way in previous years.  In fact, two additional papers from 2009 were found during the update, published in back issues of the Bulletin of the Indian Meteorological Society; these were added to the total for 2009.
As in the past, the most entertaining aspect of counting Giovanni publications is observing the remarkable range of scientific research to which the system (and the data it contains) contributes. The highlights below were extracted from the 71 papers that were found in the most recent update.   Below these highlights is the entire list of the most recent publications, with links to either abstracts of the papers, or, in some cases, the actual online version of the paper.   (Papers in PDF are noted with ‘[PDF]’ at the end of their references.)    Every effort has been made to link to a page or paper that is publically available; however, because the Goddard Space Flight Center library enables online access to numerous scientific journals, it is possible that some of the links may not be accessible to general public users.
  • A team of researchers from China and Ghana, led by Kwaku Amaning Adjei of Hohai University, Nanking, described the validation of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) data in the Black Volta Basin of Ghana.
  • Jean-Luc Baray of the Laboratoire de l’Atmosphère et des Cyclones, Université de la Réunion (on the French Island of La Réunion in the Indian Ocean) led an investigation of the long-range transport of aerosols from biomass burning observed over the remote Antarctic island archipelago of Kerguelen.
  • A group of marine scientists from Argentina headed by Marina Degrati of Central Nacional Patagónico (CONICET) investigated the foraging behavior of dusky dolphins in a paper published in Marine Mammal Science.
  • Research on dust and its impacts around the world was a prominent theme in 2012. Two investigations in the Mediterranean basin pertained to the relationship between dust and thermal anomalies (Gaetani et al.) in the Mediterranean region, and dust and chlorophyll concentrations (Gallisai et al.) in the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Pavel Kishcha of Tel-Aviv University and his colleagues investigated an ‘unexpected’ trend in aerosol optical thickness over the northwest Bay of Bengal after the monsoon season and reported their results in the American Geophysical Union’s Journal of Geophysical Research. (Kishcha was a featured presenter at the 2012 Gregory G. Leptoukh Online Giovanni Workshop, where he also discussed his research on aerosols in the atmosphere over the Indian subcontinent.)
  • Krzyscin et al. described the use of space-based estimates of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation from the Sun as part of a solar heliotherapy treatment for psoriasis. 
  • Sara Martínez-Alonso from the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado and her co-authors described the first time carbon monoxide was detected in volcanic eruption plumes, in observations of two Icelandic volcanic eruptions using the Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) instrument on the NASA Terra satellite.
  • Other Argentinian researchers, led by Fernando Videla, turned their gaze to the skies and investigated the contribution of Amazonian and non-Amazonian fires to the aerosol optical depth over South America in a study spanning five years.
In addition to the peer-reviewed research articles, publications in which the use of Giovanni for data distribution and analysis by the scientific community was described, as an exemplar of both current and future scientific data systems, were also added to the 2012 publications page. These publications were not included in the updated count.
