TRMM standard product 2A56 (rain gauge) subset for TRMM LBA

LBA 2A56 Gauge Data Subset Hourly Accumulations Quick looks for all GV sites

Data Set

Four rain gauge networks were established in the vicinity of the TOGA radar that is overlapped by the S-POL radar, and monitored from December 1998 through March 1999, yielding this LBA subset of TRMM standard product 2A56, rain gauge data in ascii.

Additional information about siting and operation of the rain gauge network during LBA is available on the TRMM Office campaign web site.

File names

The file naming convention for the TRMM 2A56 LBA subset is,

pppp_rrrr_nnn_ssss_yyyymm_v.asc

where,

pppp = product type
rrrr = GV site
nnn = gauge network
ssss = gauge site number
yyyy = year
mm = month
v = version

extension = "asc"

e.g. 2A56_TOGA_LBA_0001_199901_2.asc

Header Record

Each data file contains a 1 line header of the form

2A-56 TOGA LBA 0001 N2001 TIP 1.0 -10.76519 -62.13339 TOGA 23. 88. -99.9 01/03/1999 05:51 01/31/1999 19:30

Where,

2A-56 = product type
TOGA = GV SITE
LBA = Gauge Network
0001 = Gauge Number
N2001 = Gauge Name
TIP = Gauge Type (e.g. TIP = Tipping Bucket, DIS = Distrometer)
1.0 = Data resolution (e.g. 1.0 = 1 minute)
-10.76519 = latitude
-62.13339 = longitude
TOGA = Principle GV radar
23. = range from principle radar (km)
88. = azimuth relative to principle radar (0 ref = North)
-99.9 = elevation (meters; -99.9 = missing)
01/03/1999 = beginning date
05:51 = beginning time
01/31/1999 = ending date
19:30 = ending time

Data Record

Data records have a variable number of lines as only non zero records are written to file. They are of the form

95 02 12 43 14 16 00 4.75

Where,

95= year
02= month
12= day
43= Julian Day
14= hour
16= minute
00= second
4.75= rain rate (mm/hr)

Missing data value = -999.9 (represented by two contiguous records delineating the begin and end date and time of period.

Suspect Data: -500 < value < 0 (Note that negative rain rates are treated as suspect, but are always greater than special value attached to missing data.)
