Cloud Particle Imager (CPI) Data from TRMM LBA

View animation Data Access

Overview

In the interest of improving techniques for hydrometeor identification from in-situ microphysical observations during TRMM LBA, the new Cloud Particle Imager (CPI) manufactured by Spec, Inc. was deployed on the University of North Dakota (UND) CESSNA Citation II aircraft. This probe gives vastly improved images of cloud and precipitation particles compared to conventional 2D PMS probes. The Citation's payload combined the CPI, the High Volume Precipitation Spectrometer (HVPS) and a conventional 2D probe yielding an unprecedented characterization of particle types and particle size distributions.
