University of Washington Convair 580 Data
This file contains information about the data provided by the University
of Washington instruments flown onboard their CV580 aircraft during the
KWAJEX field campaign. This data is preliminary and is not final!
Each data file contains one flight of data, taken at approximately 1Hz
intervals. The data consists of navigation, meteorology, and cloud
physics.
The distribution of these data sets is funded by NASA's
Earth Science Enterprise. The data are not copyrighted;
however, we request that when you
publish data or results using these data, please
acknowledge as follows:
The authors wish to thank Prof. Peter V. Hobbs, Department of Atmospheric Sciences, University of Washington for the production of these data and the
Distributed Active Archive Center(Code 610.2) at the Goddard Space Flight
Center, Greenbelt, MD, 20771, which archives and distributes them under
sponsorship of NASA's Earth Science Enterprise.
Professor Peter V. Hobbs died in July 2005. Please direct questions about this data set to
The University of Washington Cloud & Aerosol Research Group
This data set consists of navigation, meteorology and
cloud physics parameters collected onboard the University of
Washington's Convair 580. Data were collected on 18 flights from
July 25, 1999 through August 31, 1999.
Each data file contains one flight of data, taken at approximately 1Hz
intervals. The data consists of navigation, meteorology, and cloud
physics.
Naming Conventions
- The data files are named prelim_xxxx.txt where
- prelim = processing level
- xxxx = 4-digit flight number
- txt = ascii text
File Formats.
The data files are simple text files with each second of data on its own line.
All data is tab delimited.
Bad values are denoted with the value '-999.99'.
These files were created in an Unix environment, so each line terminates with
a line feed, not a carriage-return/line-feed as in DOS and Windows. You can
easily convert these files to the Windows format by opening and saving these
files using WordPad.
Line Formats.
- Line 1 contains the flight number (1783 through 1800).
- Lines 2-9 contain column headers as well as any other pertinent notes
(such as any time discontinuities in the data).
- Lines 10 and beyond contain data records -- 1 record for each second of flight.
Column Formats:
All data columns are tab delimited.

| *Note: If a flight starts before midnight and ends after
midnight, the hour will continue to increment beyond 23 (11 PM). Thus, in this
case, 12AM becomes 24, 1AM becomes 25, etc. |
