NLDAS Monthly Data Sets Are Released at NASA GES DISC

The NASA GSFC Hydrological Sciences Laboratory (HSL) and Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) are pleased to announce the release of the North American Land Data Assimilation System (NLDAS) monthly data sets in the GES DISC Hydrology data portal (http://disc.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/hydrology/data-holdings).

NLDAS is a collaborative project between NASA GSFC, NOAA, Princeton University, and the University of Washington. The NLDAS project has created surface meteorological forcing data sets using the best-available observations and re-analyses. The forcing data sets are used to drive four separate land-surface models (LSMs) to produce data sets of soil moisture, snow, runoff, and surface fluxes. Additional information about NLDAS is available from: http://ldas.gsfc.nasa.gov/nldas/ and from http://www.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/mmb/nldas/.  The latter site also hosts the near real-time NLDAS Drought Monitor.

NLDAS hourly data, accessible from the NASA GES DISC Hydrology Data Holdings Portal, http://disc.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/hydrology/data-holdings, are broadly used by various user communities in modeling, research, and applications, such as drought and flood monitoring, watershed and water quality management, and case studies of extreme events.

To further facilitate analysis of water and energy budgets and trends, the HSL has generated NLDAS monthly data products. NLDAS monthly data are generated from the NLDAS hourly data, consisting of monthly accumulations for precipitation, runoff, evaporation, and snow melt; and monthly averages for other variables. More information about these how monthly data are generated is available in the NLDAS README documents, located at  http://disc.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/hydrology/documentation.

The NLDAS data are created using the GRIdded Binary (GRIB) format, WMO GRIB-1.  More information describing how to read GRIB files can be found in the README documents.  For more details about the GRIB format, please see http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/docs/on388/.

The table below lists the NLDAS data sets available at the NASA GES DISC.

In a future release, an NLDAS monthly climatology data set will be generated based on the monthly data and made accessible also from the Hydrology Data Holdings Portal. Also, NLDAS-2 Sacramento model (SAC) and variable infiltration capacity model (VIC) hourly and monthly data sets will be accessible from the Hydrology Data Holdings Portal in the near future.

All NLDAS data sets available from the NASA GES DISC can be accessed from the Hydrology Data Holdings Portal, http://disc.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/hydrology/data-holdings, via the following access methods:

NLDAS Hourly Portal:

http://gdata1.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/daac-bin/G3/gui.cgi?instance_id=NLDAS0125_H

NLDAS Monthly Portal:

http://gdata1.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/daac-bin/G3/gui.cgi?instance_id=NLDAS0125_M

Parameter and spatial subsetting and format conversion (GRIB to NetCDF) are available via Mirador (http://mirador.gsfc.nasa.gov/) and the Simple Subset Wizard (SSW; http://disc.gsfc.nasa.gov/SSW/): currently for all hourly data sets and coming soon, for all monthly data.

The two sample images in Figures 1 and 2 were generated from NLDAS monthly data via the Giovanni NLDAS Monthly Portal.
