The science team for the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) on the Aura satellite is pleased to announce the release of a new MLS "Version 4.2" dataset. Notable improvements for v4.2, compared to the earlier v3.3/v3.4 data, include a significant reduction in the severity and frequency of cloud impacts on the ozone, carbon monoxide, and nitric acid products (mainly affecting the tropical upper troposphere); a greater yield of useful hydroxyl (OH) observations from more recent years in the mission; and a new methanol product, for which further validation is planned.
MLS v4.2 (and earlier) data are available from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC), http://disc.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/Aura/data-holdings/MLS/index.shtml.
Users are urged to read the MLS v4.2 data quality document (available from the location linked above), and are encouraged to contact the MLS science team with any questions. Reprocessing of the 10-year MLS record with the v4.2 algorithms is underway and is estimated to be completed in early 2016. "Forward processing" of ongoing MLS observations has also been updated to v4.2. Forward processing with earlier (v3.4 and v2.3) algorithms will be discontinued after March 31st, 2015.
