Suspended Sediments, Suspended Matter

Other Names

SPM, Suspended Solids, Turbidity

Definition

Mineral particulates in coastal and oceanic surface waters.
Suspended sediments are normally derived from erosional processes on land and delivered to the ocean via rivers. They supply material to create and maintain beach and coastal areas, and may be associated with nutrients delivered to the ocean by rivers, fostering phytoplankton growth. Sediments may also be suspended in shallow ocean waters by winds and storms. They are important to the investigation of the dynamics of the coastal and littoral zone.

Applications

(1) Physical oceanography (3) Ocean biology
(2) Ocean optics

Spectrum
