Nimbus-7 Limb Infrared Monitor of the Stratosphere (LIMS)

Summary

Version 6 data from the Limb Infrared Monitor of the Stratosphere (LIMS) instrument, mounted on the Nimbus-7 satellite, are available from the GES DISC. LIMS measured thermal IR emissions from the Earth limb at 6 bands (6.2, 6.3, 9.6, 11.3 and two at 15 µm). The instrument operated successfully for about 9 months from October 25, 1978 to May 28, 1979. The current principal investigator for LIMS is Dr. Ellis E. Remsberg. There are two products available:

LIMSN7L2:

The data consist of daily level-2, geolocated vertical profiles of temperature, geopotential height, and mixing ratios of ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), water vapor (H2O), and nitric acid (HNO3). Vertical resolution of the data is approximately 0.88 km (109 pressure levels from 1000 to 0.001 hPa), and the horizontal resolution is about 190 km along the orbit track (1.6 degrees latitude near the equator). There are about 260 profiles per orbit (one profile every 24 seconds). The LIMS version 6 level 2 profile data are written as ASCII formatted files and contain a full days worth of measurements for all parameters.

LIMSN7L2 data files can be downloaded using the GES DISC Mirador tool.

LIMSN7L3:

The data consist of daily, zonal Fourier coefficients spaced every two degrees latitude from 64 ̊S to 84 ̊N of temperature, geopotential height, and mixing ratios of ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), water vapor (H2O), and nitric acid (HNO3).  The coefficients are available at up to 28 pressure levels from 316 to 0.01 hPa with 6 levels per decade of pressure corresponding to a vertical resolution of about 3 km. The LIMS version 6 level 3 data are written as ASCII formatted files. The data are separated into files by parameter, by ascending (day) and descending (night) orbit segments, as well as a combined orbit file (except for NO2).

LIMSN7L3 data files can be downloaded using the GES DISC Mirador tool.

NOTE:
The version 6 LIMS level 2 profile data product supercedes the data product known as LAIPAT (version 5 LIMS inverted profile achival tape). Also, the version 6 LIMS level 3 product replaces the old LAMAT (version 5 LIMS map archival tape) and LASMAT (version 5 LIMS stacked map archival tape) products.
